I was first introduced to Young Living in 1994 when I was pregnant with my second son.  I had been suffering excruciating heartburn and was told by my doctor that the only thing I could take to relieve the pain was Tums, and I was eating them as though I owned stock in the company – to no avail. 

I mentioned this to my aunt, who immediately shipped a bottle of DiGize to me with instructions to cease the Tums immediately and instead rub one drop of the essential oil blend on the spot where I felt the discomfort.

At this time, I had no idea what essential oils were.  In fact, I was one of the drug store’s best customers.  It was easy.  I went to the store and read the labels that clearly told me what product to buy.  That wasn’t the case with Young Living’s products.  For someone that didn’t even know what essential oils were, let alone what to do with them, this presented a huge learning curve! 

However, my trust in my aunt’s wisdom outweighed my skepticism of this “snake oil” so I followed her instructions and for the first time in months the heartburn went away… instantly!  For the first time in months I was able to sleep at night… lying down.

When my son was born, my aunt sent an Essential 7 kit to me so that I would have the “tools” I needed to safely care for my children.  Not knowing what to do with them yet not wanting to offend her, I politely thanked her for her generous (I had no idea what the value might be) gift and I placed the kit in a drawer where it lived for the next couple years.

My "ah-ha" Moment

My “ah-ha” moment came late in 1997 when my younger son, then a toddler, came running down the hallway toward me as I was stoking the fire in our wood stove and grabbed hold of the door with both hands.  The wood stove was our only source of heat and it had been burning non-stop for several months.  I knew that the door was hot enough to cause third-degree burns in no time. 

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I recalled hearing that lavender was good for burns so as my husband was running cold water over his hands, I retrieved the Essential 7 kit, blew off the dust, and opened it in search of the lavender.  I found the lavender as well as a blend called PanAway (at that time it was called PaneAway making it a no-brainer).

I literally poured the lavender on my son’s hands, followed by the PanAway.  As soon as the PanAway touched his hands, he stopped crying and did not cry again.  By the next morning you couldn’t even tell what had happened.  At that point, I knew there was something more to this “snake oil” and I wanted to learn everything I could about it. 

The Journey Begins...

I attended my first convention in 1998 and have not missed one since, including extensive training in the science and application of therapeutic essential oils.  My boys are now teenagers and until they reached middle school, they didn’t even know what Tylenol was.  And over the years I have experienced thousands of “ah-ha” moments with my essential oils.

Like most Young Living distributors, I did not become a distributor to sell products.  I became a distributor to purchase my products as a wholesale customer.  The business sort of “grew” from my inability to keep these precious oils a secret.  You know, sort of like referring someone to a great restaurant or movie, except I earn a commission with this referral.
