During the bubonic plague era of the fifteenth century, four thieves were captured and charged with robbing the dead and dying victims. In exchange for a more lenient sentence, the magistrate required the thieves to divulge their secret of how they able to complete this gruesome theft without contracting the deadly plague themselves. Their explanation revealed that as perfumers and spice traders they created a special concoction of cloves, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata and rosemary, which they rubbed on their hands, ears, and temples.
